Patient Educator

Division/Department: Field
Supervisor: General Manager

Purpose: Work closely with referring physicians, hospital personnel and other clinicians to ensure the best professional care of the patient. Manage the initial setup and education of new patients, including the assessment and delivery of CPAP and other respiratory products ensuring effective and long-term use (compliance). Provide support to patients.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Training and Abilities:

  • Successful completion of all scheduled New Employee Orientation Programs
  • Successful completion of all training requirements
  • Skills to read, write and perform both mathematics calculations and the English language effectively
  • Ability to work independently; detail oriented with excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to lift or carry 50 lbs
  • Ability to communicate independently and verbally with personable and effective speaking skills – excellent communications skills
  • Ability to accurately administer precise medication doses and procedures in the practice of Respiratory Therapy

Primary Functions:

  • Handle delivery and setup of CPAP and other respiratory equipment and provide all needed supplies and products to the patient.
  • Responsible for patient/caregiver education and training as well as assessing home environment to ensure safe and long-term use of products and services provided by American HomePatient.
  • Responsible for consulting with the physician, healthcare practitioners and others regarding patient treatment, medical condition and home environment.
  • Is responsible for the accurate completion of patient and equipment data records, not limited to preventative maintenance of records, charting, progress notes, clinical files, equipment records and other necessary records.

Auxiliary Functions:

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Certified Respiratory Technician (CRT), Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) as licensed by the NBRC or non-licensed appropriately trained personnel as allowed by state law
  • Prior experience in CPAP setup and support
  • Prior experience in Home Respiratory Therapy is preferred
  • Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in state(s) of practice
  • Valid driver’s license
